Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had many unforgettable and profound sayings. One of the most important of those I think was:“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
The Bible says to “Love one another.” In another Scripture it says, “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:43, NIV)
And so, I ask, do you love those you don’t like? Are you praying for them? Are you filled with anger and bitterness, vengeance and vilification? Do you give grace and forgive?
Our culture right now is filled with such hate and bitterness that we are talking past each other. We are not hearing each other; all we hear is noise. Yelling our thoughts at each other only achieves noise while we drown the other voices out.
If you want unity then do unifying things.
If you want love then give love.
If you want peace then do peaceful things.
If you want understanding then understand.
As the Bible says, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” (1 Corinthians 13:4-7)
Be blessed today. Only love can change the world for the better. That’s it.
