Watching the first day of the 2021 Masters Tournament, there was a highlight reel of Jordon Spieth from the 2017 Masters as he was hitting out of some pine straw some 230 yards away from the hole, asked his caddie, Michael Greller, “what would Arnie do?” He of course was referring to the great Arnold Palmer. (The answer of course was, go for it)
I like that question, but for another reason. Arnold Palmer demonstrated a leadership quality that has had a lasting impact on people. Sending handwritten notes.
One of the things Arnold Palmer is known for is sending notes of congratulations to tournament winners, but I also learned that he sent letters of encouragement to Arnold Palmer Scholarship winners at certain colleges, like Wake Forest.
That is the mark of a Servant Leader. Servant Leaders write handwritten notes.
What does a handwritten note do?
- Reveals time was taken on the part of the writer on your behalf
- Shows he/she considers you important
- Provides encouragement
- Gives guidance
- Supports efforts
- Expresses thanks and appreciation
How does that play out in the recipient’s life?
- The recipient feels connected to someone they love and respect
- They feel uplifted and strengthened in their efforts
- They feel valued, important, and significant
- They feel they matter…to others
Today would be a good day, to write someone a handwritten note. You’ll be glad you did….and so will the recipient.
